Visitors' Information Centre

Port Adelaide was established in 1837 and has many of South Australia's oldest building, many of which are heritage listed. Pictured is the Visitors' Information Centre which is housed in the old Police Station.

Dockside apartments

Across the river from yesterday's photo is a major residential development. I don't particularly like the style; but they may look OK when finished. From memory, I think there used to be a sugar refinery on the site.

A changing Port

Port Adelaide was once a busy port, with many wharves, storage sheds and cranes. With the advent of larger ships with bulk handling and containers, the shipping activity has more and more been moved to our Outer Harbour. The old wharves and buildings are being replaced with promenades and modern housing.

Over the next week or so, I intend posting more shots from the Port district; some of the old and some of the new.

New houses - 2

A follow up from yesterday's post; the houses are near completion. There are two houses at the back; both sharing a common roof and joined by their garages.

New houses

In many of Adelaide's suburbs old houses are being demolished and new ones are being constructed. Often, as shown here, two or more houses are built on one block that originally had one house on it.

Traditionally brick-veneer houses have been built with timber frames, but many builders are now using steel as shown here. I took this photo about 6 months ago. Tomorrow I will photograph and post the almost completed houses.

ABC Wednesdays - W for Wattle

The golden wattle is a native Australian shrub, growing naturally in the southern states. It belongs to the acacia family. I took these photos in the Adelaide foothills, about 8 km from my home.

The wattle is Australia's floral emblem and is featured on our coat of arms. This photo is from the Australian National Botanic Gardens website. You can read more about it here.

Inside Christ Church

This is a view of the inside of Christ Church in North Adelaide; not a elaborate as St Peter's, but none the less still quite impressive.

The current organ was installed in 1873, but it was been renovated and enhanced on several occasions; in 2003 it underwent a major refurbishment.

Christ Church

Christ Church in North Adelaide is one of our oldest churches. Built in 1848-49, it served as Adelaide's cathedral while St Peter's was being built.

History mural

This is part of a large 1982 wall mural at Prospect entitled History of Australia.

This interesting mural depicts many scenes that are significant in Australia's history, but not necessarily South Australia.
  • Convict labour and soldiers on guard were commonplace in the Eastern states, but South Australia was established as a free settlers' colony.
  • Ned Kelly, a bushranger, was a Victorian.
  • The Eureka flag and the Eureka Stockade were at Ballarat in Victoria.
The art work at the base of the mural is representative of Australia's indigenous culture.

Gutter repair

What's that noise? A couple of weeks ago I went out the front of my house to find council workers cutting through the road surface. A couple of days later a front end loader did its bit; ripping up the road and gutter. A new gutter was formed and the verge was leveled. Now for the grass to grow back again.

ABC Wednesdays - V for Vickers Vimy

Ross and Keith Smith, together with mechanics Jim Bennett and Wally Shier, flew the Vickers Vimy G-EAOU ("God 'Elp All Of Us") to win the England to Australia air race in 1919. The Australian Government had sponsored the race offering a £10,000 prize to the first All-Australian crew to complete the journey.

The Vickers Vimy was a British heavy bomber developed for the First World War. This plane was fitted with Rolls Royce Eagle engines.

The Smith brothers were both from Adelaide, so it is fitting that a permanent display has been set up at the Adelaide Airport to honour their achievement.

Adelaide Airport

Adelaide has a new Airport Terminal; opened in 2005, it incorporates domestic and international flights. Singapore Airlines is one of five carriers that operates international flights from Adelaide; and is the only one that has direct flights daily.

It is hard to believe that it is almost a year ago that we returned from a wonderful trip to France on one of these planes. You can see a blog of our trip here.

Flight path

Taken this morning at the Adelaide Airport, this is the approach to main runway. Planes approaching from this direction will have flown over the City and some western suburbs.

Combined Bands' Concert

Today the band I play in, the Henley and Grange Concert Band, performed in a concert at Murray Bridge. It was a combined concert with Murray Bridge Community Concert Band which was celebrating its 15th birthday. Murray Bridge is about 80 kilometres east of Adelaide.

Each band performed a selection of music and then as a finale we combined to perform five numbers together; in all over 60 musicians on stage.

Beehive Corner

On the corner of King William Street and Rundle Mall; the Beehive Corner building was built in the Gothic Revival style in 1895-96. It underwent changes over the years, but was restored to its former glory in 1998.

South Australian Museum

This is the entrance to the South Australian Museum. The red brick bulding connects two beautiful sandstone buildings (one was shown yesterday). This 'temporary' building was built in 1892-93. The museum has the largest Australian Aboriginal Culture's collection in the world.

ABC Wednesdays - U for urban sheep

These sheep are in a paddock only 6km from the Adelaide city centre. This is part of Urrbrae Agricultural High School; a 46 hectare (114 acre) site. The school was established in 1932 and has a current enrolment of about 1000 students.

The end of an era

This is another of the locations at Freeling used in "McLeod's Daughters". Another key location was the Kingsford Property, known as Drover's Run in the series.
Unfortunately we visited the district a week late; we missed the sale and a chance to visit the property!

Gungellan Hotel

This hotel is in Freeling, about 60 km north of Adelaide. If you have seen the television series "McLeod's Daughters" you will recognise it as one of the locations used. The final series was shot late last year, so it has resumed life as a normal pub now. It was built in 1867 as the Railway Hotel.

Al Khalil Mosque

Historically, Adelaide has been dubbed the City of Churches; a reflection of the religious freedom and a range of ethic peoples that have settled here. In addition to the many Christian churches, there are many other places of worship like this mosque at Cheltenham.

Multicultural mural 2

Another mural on the school's wall; the unity of happy children from many different backgrounds. Although the original murals were painted in 1986, they were repainted in 2007; hence their fresh bright appearance.

Multicultural mural

This mural is on the wall of Ascot Park Primary School. It was unveiled in March 1986 and I presume it would have been part of South Australia's 150th year celebrations.

Here is some infomation about South Australia’s cultural diversity from The SA Multicultural Website:

  • South Australians were born in more than 200 different countries
  • those born overseas number approximately 300 000 or 20% of the State’s total population
  • those born in Europe comprise approximately 220 000 individuals or 75% of all foreign born
  • those born in Asia comprise approximately 40 000 or 14% of the overseas born
  • in the Census 2001 approximately 23 000 South Australians (or 1.6% of the total population) identified themselves as Indigenous Australians
  • approximately 12% of all South Australians speak languages other than English at home, including approximately 4 000 persons who speak Indigenous languages.

A southern bike trail

Another shot from last Sunday. This is one of the things I enjoy about cycling; riding through river valleys on cycle paths like this - leisurely, peaceful and scenic.

ABC Wednesdays - T for tree kangaroo

Unlike a couple of photos I posted recently I did not photograph this in the wild; I took these photos in the Adelaide Zoo. The tree kangaroo is found naturally in Northern Queensland and New Guinea. Its diet consists mainly of leaves and fruit.

The tree kangaroo has a much longer tail that other species; adapted for balance.

Mountain view

I took this shot on Sunday 1st June; the first day of winter. It was a gloroius day, with clear skies and a maximum of about 20C. I had ridden from the coast in the distance to this point in the hills; a climb of about 400 metres. It was well worth the effort; the view was superb.

Corner Deli

A follow up from yesterday's theme day; this is my nearest corner store. This is a delicatessan that carries a small range of groceries and other items. It is over two kilometres from my house. Typical of the corner stores of the past, it includes an attached private residence.

May Theme Day - my local store

This month's City Daily Photo theme day is "my favourite corner store or local shop."

When I was a child we had two corner stores within walking distance of home. That was the norm then, but now most people shop at large supermarkets and most corner stores have gone.

My favourite local shop is a smallish independently owned supermarket, and it is within walking distance of home. It has competitive pricing and has some of the qualities of a corner store; good quality fruit and veg and friendly and helpful staff.

Over 170 other CDP sites are participating in this month's theme day. Please pay them a visit.
