Terminal terminated

If you visited Adelaide on a domestic flight prior to 2006 you would have arrived here; the Adelaide Airport Domestic Terminal. Now it is being demolished, but I am not sure what plans have been made for the site. Currently the southern end is still being used for some regional airline arrivals and departures.

A new a dual international/domestic terminal was officially opened on 7th October 2005, but because of problems with the re-fuelling system it was not fully operational until 17th February 2006.

ABC Wednesdays - Q for Qantas

Qantas is Australia's national airline; it provides both domestic and international services.

Qantas is an acronym for Queensland And Northern Territory Air Services. The company was founded in 1920 at Winton in outback Queensland.


The airline has been dubbed as "The Flying Kangaroo"; the company logo being a kangaroo. The logo has been redesigned over the years; one of the earlier logos actually included wings on the kangaroo.

A380 visits Adelaide

Today the world's biggest commercial aircraft recently acquired by Qantas landed in Adelaide for the first time. Thousands of people took up vantage points at and near the airport to get a glimpse of the big 'bird'.

It was one of a series of training and promotional flights around Australia before it commences its first commercial service between Melbourne and Los Angeles on 20 October.

Pilots of the future

Another of the activities at "Science Alive" was a computer flight simulator. The stand was run by the University of South Australia (Unisa) which offers a degree in civil aviation.

Navy Week

Pictured is an A109 helicopter at Wigley Reserve in Glenelg. On Saturday the Royal Australian Navy held a show as part of Navy Week in Adelaide. Numbers of visitors were low, probably due to the threatening inclement weather.

ABC Wednesdays - V for Vickers Vimy

Ross and Keith Smith, together with mechanics Jim Bennett and Wally Shier, flew the Vickers Vimy G-EAOU ("God 'Elp All Of Us") to win the England to Australia air race in 1919. The Australian Government had sponsored the race offering a £10,000 prize to the first All-Australian crew to complete the journey.

The Vickers Vimy was a British heavy bomber developed for the First World War. This plane was fitted with Rolls Royce Eagle engines.

The Smith brothers were both from Adelaide, so it is fitting that a permanent display has been set up at the Adelaide Airport to honour their achievement.

Adelaide Airport

Adelaide has a new Airport Terminal; opened in 2005, it incorporates domestic and international flights. Singapore Airlines is one of five carriers that operates international flights from Adelaide; and is the only one that has direct flights daily.

It is hard to believe that it is almost a year ago that we returned from a wonderful trip to France on one of these planes. You can see a blog of our trip here.

Flight path

Taken this morning at the Adelaide Airport, this is the approach to main runway. Planes approaching from this direction will have flown over the City and some western suburbs.

"Fiery" vapour trail

Late this afternoon nearing sunset, I spotted this glowing orange aircraft vapour trail; not the usual white against a blue sky.
