What's the time?

The annual clock setting task; each rear in October we wind our clocks forward one hour for daylight saving. This year for the first time South Australia has joined the eastern states by doing this on the first Sunday in October. Western Australia doesn't change until the end of the month.

During daylight saving Adelaide is GMT +10.5 hours. The eastern states are GMT +11, while Western Australia is GMT + 9 hours; at present it is still GMT +8 hours; 3 hours behind the eastern states.

Do I need to know all this? Not very often as I rarely need to contact people in the other states during business hours.

Did my computers know? Yes both my Windows XP computer and my Mac did the trick; thanks Microsoft and Apple. Oh I nearly forgot; Ubuntu Linux did the honours too.

Light paints pretty pictures doesn't it. This photo was taken only 40 minutes later than the one I posted yesterday.

Twilight

This a photo taken on the evening of the Moon Lantern Festival; a balmy spring evening on the banks of the Torrens. The centrepiece building is the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Bay to Birdwood Requests

I have had a couple of requests for particular vehicles; one from a regular blogger and the other from one of the entrants.

This is a British built Armstrong Siddeley. It was spotted by Aileni in the background of a photo I posted on Monday. Aileni owned a 1947 Armstrong Siddeley Typhoon.

This is a Morgan 3 wheeler. The request was from Warren and Cheryl. The photo is very much cropped from the image below.

Another British car manufacturer, The Morgan Motor Company was founded by H.S.F Morgan in 1910 and is still building cars today; the latest prototype being a fuel cell-powered electric vehicle; the Morgan LIFEcar (Lightweight Fuel Efficient Car).

ABC Wednesdays - K for Koala

I don't believe I don't have a better photo of a koala than this; at least it was photographed in the wild. I did have plans to go to a wildlife park last week to get some shots, but it did not eventuate.

The koala photographed is asleep, wedged securely between branches; fascinating to watch.

Like a fish out of water, this koala is in dangerous territory. Soon after I took the photo, some National Park rangers came and rescued it.

These photos were taken on French Island in Victoria. In the 1920's eighteen koalas were taken from there and relocated on Kangaroo Island, south of Adelaide. They have flourished there and as a result their numbers now exceed 25,000, causing enormous damage to eucalypt habitat.

Culling was suggested, but due to the koala being such an Australian icon and tourist attraction the idea was rejected. Instead a program of sterilisation and relocation has begun, along with re-establishment of native plants that the koalas have destroyed by their insatiable appetite.

Bay to Birdwood

Yesterday was the annual Bay to Birdwood car rally. Cars travel from West Beach, through Glenelg (The Bay) to finish at The National Motor Museum at Birdwood; a distance of 72 km.

As the procession of about 1200 vehicles travelled the route they were admired and cheered on by an estimated 100,000 or more people. This year's event was open to vintage (pre December 1955) vehicles.
