Abc Wednesdays - H for Hindmarsh Island Bridge

Hindmarsh Island is an island across the River Murray from Goolwa. This bridge was opened in 2001 after a decade of controversy. The bridge replaced a cable ferry, thus providing easier access to the island. There had been widespread opposition to the builing of the bridge from Indigenous Australian leaders, environmental groups and some local residents.

June Theme Day: Under Construction

A new bridge is being built to replace the old King Street Bridge at Glenelg. This project commenced in March and is due for completion in December this year at a cost of $9 million. The first half of the bridge has been demolished and this week pylons are being erected.

The bridge links a small peninsula at North Glenelg. During the construction period motorists have to detour several kilometres and boats (including mine) on moorings near the bridge have been temporarily located. Come on December!

Overpass progress

Last Monday the South Road overpass tram track was reconnected. There is still a lot to do, but commuters can once again travel between the City and Glenelg.

South Road Tram Overpass

This is one of the last trams to use the temporary diversion track. Over the weekend the existing track will be connected to the new one.

The tram bridge has been built at a cost of $32 million; another part of a major upgrade to the South Road corridor. This will compliment the recently completed Gallipoli Underpass.

Trams will then use the overpass, but more work is yet to be done; the completion of tram stops on the top and access lifts from the street. A pedestrian/cycle path is also being built along its northern side.

Tired old bridge

Lots of doubt has been cast over the future of the King Street Bridge due to its decline, whether it be repaired or replaced. A news report last week of almost certain funding from the federal government will ensure its replacement. Work could begin on a new bridge within a year.

Gallipoli Underpass

Today it was announced by the premier, Mr Rann, that the new road under Anzac Highway be named Gallipoli Underpass. The 118 million dollar underpass will be opened to traffic later this month; significantly improving traffic flow. Another underpass is scheduled to be built under Port Road.












This morning the public was given the opportunity to walk through the underpass at a community day; entertainment by the 10/27 Bn South Australian Army Band and other bands, a free sausage sizzle and activities for children.

Mary MacKillop Bridge

This rail bridge, opened in May this year, is named after Sister Mary MacKillop who founded the Sisters of St Joseph at Penola in 1866. In 1867 she established a school adjacent to the church in Dale Street, Port Adelaide.

She is acknowledged for her commitment to the welfare and education of the disadvantaged and is the first Australian to have been made a saint within the Roman Catholic Church.

Port River Expressway Bridges

The bridge has a height clearance of 8.65m at high tide, and the channel width is 30m.

In the closed position the river cruise operators will be able to pass through and in the open position a a vessel like a naval frigate will have access. Even modest sized yachts like my Roberts 25 will need to have the bridge open for them.

Port River Expressway Bridges Opening

Today was the official opening of a new bridge at Port Adelaide. In the afternoon the public were allowed the walk across the bridge, and at 4 pm the bridge opened to allow a large yacht to pass through.

As you can see in the photo there are in fact two bridges; the other one is a rail bridge.

The road bridge which cost 178 million dollars is named after a Port Adelaide World War II hero Tom "Diver" Derrick VC, who swam in the Port River.

People in attendance on the day were handed an A4 sized poster as a memento.

Another bridge at the Port

There are many old warehouses in Port Adelaide that once would have been full of items like wool, waiting to be shipped out. Many of these now are boarded up and empty.

Founded in South Australia in the mid 1800's Elder, Smith and Company became one of the World's largest wool sellers.

The new bridges at the Port

Here is the bridge I mentioned in yesterday's post. In fact there are two bridges here; road and rail. They are part of the Port River Expressway that connects our shipping port to the intra/interstate road and rail network.

Birkenhead Bridge

The Birkenhead Bridge has been providing access to Outer Harbour since 1940. The bridge opens in the middle to allow large ships to pass through. When this occured there were obviously lengthy traffic delays.

With the increasing use of the port facilities at Outer Harbour, there has been an ever increasing amount of heavy traffic through Port Adelaide. A new bridge is being built to bypass the city centre.

One and All

The 42 metre long One and All is South Australia's youth development sail training vessel. It is moored at dock 2 at Port Adelaide.

Port Adelaide is under redevelopment at present, with lots of waterside housing being built. In the background you can see a new bridge being constructed. Port Adelaide is several kilometres inland and was once a busy port. Now most cargo ships dock at Outer Harbour, which is at the entrance to the Port River.

I am posting this photo in response to a request from Sailor Girl. Yesterday I went to Port Adelaide to photograph this vessel, and was fortunate to be able to have tour of it as I have a friend who is the ship's engineer.

In addition to the sail training voyages, they regularly run evening and daytime cruises. I now intend going on one of these, so I am sure you will see more of the One and All sometime in the future.

Bakewell Bridge

This afternoon I went for a ride on my bicycle to check out the new Bakewell Bridge underpass that was officially opened yesterday morning. I am pleased to see the effort going into new road design to cater for cyclists. There is a dedicated 1.8m wide bike lane on each side, as well as a shared path for pedestrians and recreational cyclists.

Additionally there is a bus/taxi lane and two vehicle lanes in each direction. Work commenced with the demolition of the existing 80 year old bridge in October 2006. The project, which cost 41 million dollars, also includes new rail and road bridges.

Adelaide city

I have been posting for over a month now and have not yet shown a photo of Adelaide City; so here it is. Adelaide was built on the banks of the River Torrens, a source of water for the first European settlers. The river's function now is aesthetic and recreational. The photo is taken from a spot near the weir which holds back the water; the river only flows after heavy rains.

The bridge you can see is the Morphett Street Bridge; it links Adelaide and North Adelaide. In the background you can see the Mt Lofty Ranges; about 10 kilometres east.

Theme Day: Bridges

I have not registered for the theme day, but am posting a bridge photo anyway. This is the King Street Bridge which spans the Patawalonga. It is in need of major repairs or replacement. The bridge was named after Thomas King, mayor of Glenelg from 1882 to 1884.
