ABC Wednesdays - N for National Wine Centre

The National Wine Centre of Australia was built in 2000 and has won many awards for its architecture and features. It is used as a function centre and for wine education. A key attraction for visitors is an interactive display that covers such topics as vine growing, wine regions in Australia, history and containers.

The Centre has a very large cellar that can house up to 38,000 bottles! A selection of these can be tasted at the Concourse Cafe.

I briefly visited the Centre to take some photos, but will be going back soon the spend more time looking at the display and, of course, sampling some of the wines!

Surfing at Southport

The reason I was at Southport Beach last Friday was to photograph students during their elective surfing program.

This is how it's done boys!

Maybe this week I will have a go, but I will happy if I get up on the board in an upright position; it's many years since I surfed.

ABC Wednesdays - U for Underdale

The University of South Australia had a campus at Underdale, but in 2000 it decided to consolidate and upgrade its other campuses. In 2005 saw the demolition of the site and relocation to other facilities.

The library, where my wife worked is shown here. She was relocated to the Mawson Lakes Campus.

A new housing estate, Promenade on the River Torrens, is being built on the Underdale site.

Illumination for Breast Cancer Research

This is the Hawke Building at the City West campus of the University of South Australia (UniSA).

Adelaide's three universities are participating in a global campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer research. Across Australia 14 universities illuminated some of their buildings in glowing pink; an initiative of the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Here is an extract from an email sent to UniSA staff by Professor Peter Høj (Vice Chancellor and President)

"The National Breast Cancer Foundation is the leading community-funded national organisation in Australia raising money for research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Australian Universities are being illuminated to represent the critical role of research in increasing our understanding of breast cancer.

I am proud that UniSA is taking part in this international campaign that draws public attention to the vital role research plays in developing cures, prevention strategies and treatments for devastating diseases such as breast cancer. This is one scenario where money matters - strong investment in the research undertaken at universities and other institutions will help diminish the impact of this terrible disease."

Pilots of the future

Another of the activities at "Science Alive" was a computer flight simulator. The stand was run by the University of South Australia (Unisa) which offers a degree in civil aviation.
