Compare this photo with one posted yesterday; what a difference half an hour makes to the lighting at dusk.

ABC Wednesdays - L for Lighthouse

This is the Marino Rocks Lighthouse located about a kilometre inland in the Marino Conservation Park, just south of Brighton. The lighthouse was built in 1962 and can be seen in the Gulf from a distance of up to 42 kilometres.

Bus stop seating?

No this stand has not been erected to cater for an increase in bus travellers! This is a stand on the verge of Dequetteville Terrace, one of the public roads that becomes part of the Clipsal 500 street circuit in March.

ABC Wednesdays - Z for Zoo

This is the current entrance to the Adelaide Zoo, but soon to be made redundant. A new entrance building is to be built to accommodate the expected increase in visitors when two Giant Pandas arrive in October 2009. Inside the zoo a special facility will be built for them. Their stay in Adelaide is part of the global breeding program to conserve Giant Pandas.

Zoos South Australia is a non-profit conservation charity which provides conservation education and conducts conservation, breeding and research programmes. They work within the WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums) guidelines for the ethical treatment of animals.

As well as the zoo in the City they also run Monarto Zoo, a 1000 hectare open-range sanctuary, about sixty kilometres west of Adelaide.

The Beachouse Ferris Wheel

Opened on Saturday December 6th, this is an Australian first; a single arm ferris wheel. Glenelg has waited two years longer than planned for this to eventuate, and the almost $1.8 million cost of building it was over budget. Unlike other traditional ferris wheels you get a continuous ride; people board and disembark while it moves.

Space exploration

This  is Deep Space Station 43, a 70 metre radio telescope, located at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex at Tidbinbilla about 45 km from the city. This antenna is one of a series of large antennas that enable NASA to communicate with and receive signals from distant space craft exploring our Solar System.

The complex also houses Australia's largest permanent collection of memorabilia and hardware used in the exploration of space; all very interesting.

Black Diamond Corner

Before the advent of traffic lights this structure took pride of place at the intersection of Commercial Road and St Vincent Street in Port Adelaide.

Light's Vision

This is the view of Adelaide from Montefiore Hill; not quite the view that Light had - many things have changed since his initial plan was drawn up!
The lighting towers you see in the foreground are located at Adelaide Oval. In 1997 retractable towers were built so as not to spoil the view. Unfortunately one of the towers collapsed, so in 2000 they were replaced with permanent towers.

ABC Wednesdays - L for Lighthouse

This is the Port Adelaide lighthouse, now located near the dock as part of the South Australian Maritime Museum. The lighthouse began its life in 1869 at the entrance to the Port River. The structure had been prefabricated in England and shipped to Australia in pieces.
In 1901 a new lighthouse was built at Wonga Shoal, in the Gulf of St Vincent 13 km from Port Adelaide. The light was used in the new lighthouse, but the structure was transported and re-erected on South Neptune Island in the Spencer Gulf.
When the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1985, it was restored and rebuilt at its current site.

The Whispering Wall

This dam wall has unique acoustical properties; you can stand and speak softly on one side of the 143 metre long wall and be clearly heard on the other side.

This is the Barossa Reservoir dam near the town of Williamstown, just north of Adelaide. Building started in 1899 and was completed in 1903. When it was built it was the largest dam in Australia and radical in its design.

Orontes Beacon

This beacon marks the northern end of the Orontes Bank. When sailing from Adelaide to Port Vincent one needs to pass this beacon to port.

When we sailed across the gulf we navigated using a GPS, but found out that the coordinates we had for this beacon were inaccurate; about half a nautical mile out. When we passed the beacon we marked it on the GPS, so now I have an accurate reading for the next voyage.

Retired giants

Like two sentinels standing guard; these two cranes on dock 2 at Port Adelaide are no longer in use.

Times have changed and so have the facilities and operations at Port Adelaide.
