ABC Wednesdays - V for Venus

What? a partly naked lady in the City of Churches! I suspect a few eyebrows were raised when this statue of Venus was erected on North Terrace in 1892.

This was Adelaide's first statue. Sculpted from Carrara marble, it is a copy of Canova's Venus Italica.

ABC Wednesdays - Q for Queen Victoria

Another queen statue in Adelaide (I've already posted Queen Adelaide); this is a statue of Queen Victoria that takes pride of place in the centre of Adelaide City. Queen Victoria was the reigning monarch during South Australia's formative years. This monument was erected in 1894; presented by Sir Edwin Thomas Smith, a prominent South Australian citizen - a brewer and member of local and state government.

John McDouall Stuart

Standing tall in Victoria Square is a statue of John McDouall Stuart, one of the most significant of South Australia's explorers.

His journey from Adelaide to the Indian Ocean (the northern coast of Australia) and return in 1861-62, led to the construction of the Overland Telegraph that connected Australia to England and the rest of the world.
