Adelaide Botanic Garden First Creek Wetland

Adelaide need to conserve water, so projects like this are significant for our future. Some of the water that would otherwise flow out to sea in periods of heavy rain will be captured and stored here; to be used for watering the Botanic Gardens.

South Road Tram Overpass

This is one of the last trams to use the temporary diversion track. Over the weekend the existing track will be connected to the new one.

The tram bridge has been built at a cost of $32 million; another part of a major upgrade to the South Road corridor. This will compliment the recently completed Gallipoli Underpass.

Trams will then use the overpass, but more work is yet to be done; the completion of tram stops on the top and access lifts from the street. A pedestrian/cycle path is also being built along its northern side.

ABC Wednesdays - T for Torrens

Adelaide's River Torrens is not a fast flowing river. Water is dammed at various points along the river to create lakes and wetlands; the Torrens' Lake in the City being a prime example.

Further downstream the river is almost dry for much of the year, but recent work has been done to develop a series of wetlands like this one upstream from Henley Beach Road.

Now work is being done downstream from there to create another. This is the second stage of the Breakout Creek Wetland project.

This construction stage includes the excavation of 60,000 cubic metres of material to shape the wetlands and the builing of two concrete weirs. Over the next two years the wetands will come alive with the planting of 60,000 local native plants.

Viewing platforms, jetties and boardwalks will be built to provide opportunies for fishing and bird watching.

New houses - 2

A follow up from yesterday's post; the houses are near completion. There are two houses at the back; both sharing a common roof and joined by their garages.

New houses

In many of Adelaide's suburbs old houses are being demolished and new ones are being constructed. Often, as shown here, two or more houses are built on one block that originally had one house on it.

Traditionally brick-veneer houses have been built with timber frames, but many builders are now using steel as shown here. I took this photo about 6 months ago. Tomorrow I will photograph and post the almost completed houses.

Gutter repair

What's that noise? A couple of weeks ago I went out the front of my house to find council workers cutting through the road surface. A couple of days later a front end loader did its bit; ripping up the road and gutter. A new gutter was formed and the verge was leveled. Now for the grass to grow back again.
