ABC Wednesdays - F for Ferry

This is a ferry on the River Murray at Purnong; one of the 11 ferries on the South Australian section of the river. A ferry crossing only takes a few minutes, unlike those of yesteryear which took up to half an hour; they were hand operated. The first ferries across the river were privately owned and attracted fees, but now all are government owned and are free to use.

Another river crossing; at Lyrup. A group of friends and I used this ferry when we rode from Renmark to Berri a couple of years ago; a pleasant break from riding!

In addition to the ferries in South Australia, there are also 7 bridges that cross the river.

I'd rather cross on a ferry than on a bridge!

I always enjoy your posts; I learn something new every time.

We have lots of bridges here in Vancouver area because of being at the mouth of the Fraser River and all its tributaries. But we also have lots of ferries, too, that take people and supplies to and from Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. It's always fun to ride a ferry like ours because they're all like ships!

OMG, is that a Leyland P76 there on the ferry?? Hope there is more of a flow in the river where you are...it is all really sad & scary what's happening to the Murray.

Cabacurl: it certainly is a P76 and its owner intends keeping it running for many more years.

Very interesting. I had experience in crossing in a ferry in a van when we visited Penang, Malaysia during my childhood. We were so excited back then.

Very unusual ferry for us. We are a country of ferries and I know only of one that works with cables.

Thank you for sharing!

Oh cool! I could go back and forth on this ferry for hours. Never seen one like this.

Hi Gordon! The second photo looks a bit like our ferry. We live near a river and have to cross it by ferry and I like that far more than a bridge.

That looks like a lovely relaxed way to cross the river.

Where I live in Coastal BC it takes two ferries to get there. Even though we are on the mainland, it makes it like living on an island. On one side we have the water, but on the other the coastal mountain and forest cut us off. There has been talk of putting a road in to the Vancouver area, but I hope it never happens. I like the remote aspect of our community and I'm sure a road would take that away. Today my contribution is about a special farm that used to located near my town in Coastal BC. I invite you to come see. -- Margy

I like to view ferries virtually, not be on them.

You would have needed strong arms in the old days for that ferry...

Our nearest Ferry is about an hour bike ride away, at Newcastle. It means a holiday and an adventure! Great F post G
