ABC Wednesdays - O for orchids

This photo of a display of orchids was taken last September at the Royal Adelaide Show. This was one of several exhibitions by local orchid clubs.

My research tells me that there are over 25000 species that occur naturally around the world, with an additional number of hybrids in excess of 60000.

The first time I really took notice of orchids was when I visited the Botanical Gardens in Singapore; an extensive and splendid display.

I have since 'inherited' a number of orchids from my father in law. I hope that one day I may be able to post photos of some flowering orchids from our garden.

The ABC Wednesday meme was created by Denise Nesbitt. To find out more about ABC Wednesdays and see other participants' contributions click here

orchids are part of my memories. dad used to grow them, and at that time, it took a lot time to bloom.

My siblings remember Mum and dad using a soft tooth brush to rid the aphids.

I haven't the patiences to wait for the plant to bloom. Luckily, the Auckland Domain has a green house that has orchids. When I feel nostalgic for my family, I go there and think of the old days.

Do you grow you orchids in soil?

We used to think that orchid is very rare and difficult to grow. Collector will go into jungle to look for rare species. Now the modern technology make them all so popular and easy to grow. Good luck with your own orchid.

Thanks for the comments and ecouragement.

Ann - the orchids are in pots in a special mix which allows plenty of air and drainage around the roots.

I have recently got interested in orchids, partly because phalaenopsis are one of the few houseplants I seem to be capable of keeping!

There is a cattleya I'm hoping to find, but with the restrictions on import/export, I'm having little luck.

This display is gorgeous - all those different colours together!
