Visitors' Information Centre

Port Adelaide was established in 1837 and has many of South Australia's oldest building, many of which are heritage listed. Pictured is the Visitors' Information Centre which is housed in the old Police Station.

Dockside apartments

Across the river from yesterday's photo is a major residential development. I don't particularly like the style; but they may look OK when finished. From memory, I think there used to be a sugar refinery on the site.

A changing Port

Port Adelaide was once a busy port, with many wharves, storage sheds and cranes. With the advent of larger ships with bulk handling and containers, the shipping activity has more and more been moved to our Outer Harbour. The old wharves and buildings are being replaced with promenades and modern housing.

Over the next week or so, I intend posting more shots from the Port district; some of the old and some of the new.

New houses - 2

A follow up from yesterday's post; the houses are near completion. There are two houses at the back; both sharing a common roof and joined by their garages.

New houses

In many of Adelaide's suburbs old houses are being demolished and new ones are being constructed. Often, as shown here, two or more houses are built on one block that originally had one house on it.

Traditionally brick-veneer houses have been built with timber frames, but many builders are now using steel as shown here. I took this photo about 6 months ago. Tomorrow I will photograph and post the almost completed houses.

ABC Wednesdays - W for Wattle

The golden wattle is a native Australian shrub, growing naturally in the southern states. It belongs to the acacia family. I took these photos in the Adelaide foothills, about 8 km from my home.

The wattle is Australia's floral emblem and is featured on our coat of arms. This photo is from the Australian National Botanic Gardens website. You can read more about it here.

Inside Christ Church

This is a view of the inside of Christ Church in North Adelaide; not a elaborate as St Peter's, but none the less still quite impressive.

The current organ was installed in 1873, but it was been renovated and enhanced on several occasions; in 2003 it underwent a major refurbishment.
