Theme day: Paths and Passages

I love cycling and I especially like it away from the traffic on cycle paths like this; not only is it more peaceful it is safer too. Fortunately Adelaide has a growing number of cycle paths and marked routes on side roads.

The ever present dangers of cycling on main roads hit home last week with a report of a cyclist being hit and killed by a drunk driver; sadly he was a friend and past member of my cycling group.

This photo was taken several years ago in September in a southern suburb of Adelaide. I daresay it would look slightly different today; the trees would have grown and at present the grass would have dried off from our sweltering summer heat.

This month's City Daily Photos' theme day topic is Paths and Passages; Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

It's much safer to keep to the cycle paths. This one looks well used..

I realise now why cyclist feature so heavily in your photography. We have no designated cycle lanes and it's about time we did.

Sorry to hear about your friend. That's why I drifted away from cycling. Too difficult to find a safe place to ride and too dangerous otherwise.

Please tell me it is nice and hot there. Ok, you don't have to tell me, I know! Nice choice for theme day!

And as always, I read the caption last... This is no doubt a nice tribute to your friend and to other cyclists.

A lovely photograph. You can really feel the energy of the cyclists and how they are enjoyng themselves. I'm sorry indeed to read about your friend's death. There should be more cycle tracks everywhere, Gordon.

Very sad, indeed, especially when the cyclist is blameless. As a London cycle commuter, I'm always very sad to hear of accidents but I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a place deep in my head that somehow says "phew, at least it wasn't me". Do you have http://londondailyphoto.blogspot.com/2008/09/ghost-bike.html Ghost Bikes in Australia?

Very nice bikepath. It is nice to be able to go through the countryside like this. Our bikepath is built over an old railroad and runs for some 13 miles through the country. So you are often surrounded on both sides by fields of growing corn.

I missed the theme day somehow but I wrote in my Memories blog about the roads of my youth and how they were to travel in the winter time.

A nice shot. Take care, Gordon, between mad drivers and strong sun...Hope the rain is coming soon in your area.

I understand it's close to 40° at present in ADL, hardly the kind of weather you would enjoy for cycling, but your photo is lovely!
