ABC Wednesdays - V for Venus

What? a partly naked lady in the City of Churches! I suspect a few eyebrows were raised when this statue of Venus was erected on North Terrace in 1892.

This was Adelaide's first statue. Sculpted from Carrara marble, it is a copy of Canova's Venus Italica.

The ABC Wednesday meme was created by Denise Nesbitt. To find out more about ABC Wednesdays and see other participants' contributions click here

The city fathers must have debated and came to the conclusion that What is Art is Art. Has it ever been "Graffittied?

Cheers,

Ann :)

Then again - why not? Beauty is eternal, and this is certainly a statue of a beauty!

No objections from me on the naked beauty.

I bet they were, but she's quite chaste by today's standards, isn't she?

Lovely descrete statue though I agree it probably ruffled a few feathers in the 1800's.
Perfect choice for the letter V.

Great choice for V-day. Interesting that it has stood so long - no one has ever objected? Not that I would, but many do voice their opinions vehemently these days! lol

Gorgeous statue but I'm sure, too, that it wasn't a cakewalk getting it erected there...Nice post!
