This is the St Francis Xavier Cathedral located in Wakefield Street near Victoria Square in the centre of Adelaide City. Building started in 1856 with the laying of the foundation and continued in three stages as money became available, with the final completion 140 years later; the cathedral was dedicated on the 11th July 1996.This Catholic cathedral is named after St Francis Xavier, one of its patron saints. Its first bishop was Bishop Francis Murphy who arrived in Adelaide in 1844.
