ABC Wednesdays - I for illegal

Are these trolleys stolen or just borrowed? We often see shopping trolleys left by the side of the road after someone has used them to transport their shopping home, even though they are not meant to leave the shopping centres.

I am amazed at the blatant audacity of the people who are using these trolleys outside of their yard. Are they hoping someone will come along and wheel away their junk?

I spoke to the manager of my local supermarket. If someone does spot his trolleys, he will often go out and collect them, but as far as prosecuting people for using them illegally it is not worth the effort. Unfortunately the rest of us pay for these; their cost included in the items that we buy.

A week or so after I took this photo, the trolleys were gone, but the junk was still there. I hope the council followed this up. People can arrange for up to two hard rubbish two pick-ups a year, but junk left on the footpath outside of the council's official pick-up time is considered as illegal dumping and fines apply.

We have the same problem here in UK!
Blatant is such a suitable word. Whilst there are those of us who worry constantly about what to do with our rubbish we are a minority it would seem in the face of adversity!

I am fascinated to see that this happens elsewhere in the world, I assumed it was a uniquely African problem! We often see street people using stolen trollies to transport cardboard, bottles and scrap metal that they collect to sell, and the kids on the hill near us toboggan down the street in them, much to the irritation of the residents who put up with the racket night after night!

A great I for ABC W, Gordon,
also its a miracle to me how people can live homeless? I saw them (this tolleys) In Paris , Rome, Amsterdam and New York, also In San Jose (osta Rica), all big mean cities.....

Now we have some new neighbours (from Gorgia) her in our street, and their 17 year old daughter is doing het shopping with this trolley car and leavesit behind on the street...thats normal for youth right? I don't think so...

Thanks for visiting my ABC W day and thanks for you interest in IOS,

Greetings from JoAnn (Holland)

We call them shopping carts here and my grocery store just got all new ones...I too find it hard to believe that people just walk off with the carts/trolleys....that takes some nerve! I like your "I".

I don't live in a city so I've never really seen this before with the shopping carts. I guess folks will steal about anything.

We have this problem too. We call them shopping carts here and I have seen people rolling them down the road full of different things. They are not suppose to leave the parking lot of the store.

We don't see this too much anymore now that we have to insert a quarter to get the cart out of the stalls. People are more careful to return them to get their quarter back. But it does happen here, too.

Shopping carts have minds of their own and a burning desire to see the world, so they roll themselves all over the place... :)

Shopping carts are very expensive. I think this is a universal problem. Thanks for the great post.

LAck of responsibility--lack of accountability. How do we fight it?

I see the shopping carts all over the place here too. I've even seen one in the river near my house.

Creative thinking! Great choice for I! I guess it is the same all over the world.

Some stores are getting shopping carts that have wheels that lock up when they are taken past the parking lot! Maybe that will help with the problem.

EW! Nasty. Wish I could claim it doesn't happen here, but it does.

Here we have to pay a deposit of €1 ($1.57, 79p Sterling) for a trolley. Even then, some people leave them loose.

This reminds me of back in San Diego, before we moved, they were starting to put some sort of sensors on the edges of the parking lot so that their carts won't walk wawa. Mostly it's homeless people who use the shopping carts.
Here in Georgia they are called "buggies" :)
