ABC Wednesdays - W for Wattle

The golden wattle is a native Australian shrub, growing naturally in the southern states. It belongs to the acacia family. I took these photos in the Adelaide foothills, about 8 km from my home.

The wattle is Australia's floral emblem and is featured on our coat of arms. This photo is from the Australian National Botanic Gardens website. You can read more about it here.

I know relatively little about plants, but when I see a leaf shaped like that I immediately think of eucaliptus.   But waddle it is -- very colorful...

I love the wattle tree too, Gordon! Where my daughter lives in north Queensland there are also wattle trees. According to our Aboriginal friends wattle trees were used for spears and may be even now for fishing. In a three weeks I am on my way to Oz, as I do every year! The flight is a long one.
Thanks for your visit!

Greetings from Southern California! I love that beautiful yellow wattle...that is one Aussie plant I've not seen here (I'm sure it's not the only one!). We do have lots of Eucalyptus trees that were brought here a very long time ago...the story was they were to be grown for railroad ties since they grow so fast, but it turned out they weren't good for that. So we have Eucalyptus growing all over this part of Claifornia...or do you call them gum trees?
