ABC Wednesdays - L for Lock

In the 1920's and 30's a series of 14 locks and weirs were built along the River Murray to manage water flow and levels in the river. This is Lock 4 at Bookpurnong (between Berri and Loxton).

The locks are large enough to accommodate 6 to 8 medium sized houseboats and passage through a lock takes about 20 minutes. The lock system also allows quite large cruise vessels to navigate the river.

Alongside of Lock 4 is a pleasant picnic spot. This was my cycle group's lunch stop on a ride we did from Berri in 2005.

There is a certain charm about locks - it must have been a nice pcnic.

The first lock I've seen. I barged when I was younger.. Those locks can be hard work. Good choice and what a lovely looking area.

Very original and interesting post. I've gone through locks on the Mississippi River and thought it was fascinating.

Well, I've learned something. I had no idea that you had houseboats on rivers in Australia! I don't know why I should think you didn't .. .it just never occurred to me!

That's quite a sizeable lock, isn't it?

I have been in the locks many times as a kid as we lived on the river and to get to one place or another we had to go through the locks....kinda scary when you are in a small motor boat sitting next to the very large barges!!!! nice photo today Gordon.
