The locks are large enough to accommodate 6 to 8 medium sized houseboats and passage through a lock takes about 20 minutes. The lock system also allows quite large cruise vessels to navigate the river.
Alongside of Lock 4 is a pleasant picnic spot. This was my cycle group's lunch stop on a ride we did from Berri in 2005.

Always fun to see these in action!
Nice "L"
There is a certain charm about locks - it must have been a nice pcnic.
A good one. There is a fair bit of variety today.
The first lock I've seen. I barged when I was younger.. Those locks can be hard work. Good choice and what a lovely looking area.
What a beautiful spot for a picnic.
So very peaceful looking.
Bear((( )))
Very original and interesting post. I've gone through locks on the Mississippi River and thought it was fascinating.
Nice shot and interesting reading.
Well, I've learned something. I had no idea that you had houseboats on rivers in Australia! I don't know why I should think you didn't .. .it just never occurred to me!
That's quite a sizeable lock, isn't it?
Nice! Thanks for the lesson! I learned! Awesome L post.
I have been in the locks many times as a kid as we lived on the river and to get to one place or another we had to go through the locks....kinda scary when you are in a small motor boat sitting next to the very large barges!!!! nice photo today Gordon.
They have a lot of those in England, too. Good choice for today. :D
I can see why this is a favorite picnic spot!
