ABC Wednesdays - P for Primitive Methodists

This building caught my eye in Willunga last weekend, especially the inscription relating to its history.

Built in 1867 as a Primitive Methodist Church, it became a private residence in 1890 and then Vanessa's restaurant in 1979 and is now Christina's on High Street.

The Primitive Methodists was one of three streams of Methodism that was being practised in the early days of South Australia. Originally started in 1808 in England by a Methodist lay preacher Hugh Bourne after his expulsion from the Methodist movement; his ideas were deemed radical by the Methodists' leadership.

In 1900 the three streams of Methodism - Bible Christians, Primitive Methodists and Wesleyans were united to form the Methodist Church of Australia.

The ABC Wednesday meme was created by Denise Nesbitt. To find out more about ABC Wednesdays and see other participants' contributions click here

Great post and history, Gordon, and a really lovely shot! How interesting that, of all things, it became a restaurant!

New to me, Primitive Methodists. Said it before say it again, you learn so much through blogging. Unique choice.

A big part of my life was influenced by the Wesley methodists. I had all my schooling in a Methodist school.

Didn't know about the three kinds of Methodists. The church building is very unusual.

That is just fascinating! I would have never thought that the words primitive and methodists would be paired together!

Interesting architecture and history to go with it. It's nice that the building has survived in multiple ways. My contribution this week is a pool. I invite you to come over and float around on my pool toy. - Margy
